Is Obama Paying for the Stimulus and Spending Bills in the Daily Tracking Polls?

By Brandon Martin

A few opinion polls show Barak Obama’s popularity is sliding significantly. Here’s commentary from some of the best of the conservative blogosphere: Sinking, Sinking, Sinking… and Obama Continues to Slide

We aren’t quite as optimistic about what these recent polls mean. Gateway Pundit quotes the Los Angeles Times as reporting:

“Despite the economic turmoil of recent months, fully 70% still say they’re better off in a free market economy even with its severe ups and downs, while 54% are willing to accept more temporary government involvement at this time.”

It is encouraging, but not suprising, that this poll reflects a silent majority of Americans who are more tempered in their political thought. However, we are not as concerned with talk of a majority of Americans as we are with how the third of the country that constitutes the loyal Democratic voting block has changed. We suspect that a number of factors including Obama’s campaign and election have significantly moved an unprecedented percentage of the Democratic party to the hard Left. Perhaps, these are the 30% who could not bring themselves to answer that as a matter of principle, the country is better off with free markets. That may bode well for Republicans if it marginalizes the Democratic party, but it is difficult to see how watching nearly a third of our Democratic friends and neighbors open their hearts and minds to the idea that the country will be better off without economic freedom is a good thing in the long-run.
