The Federalist Society: Conservative and Libertarian Resources for Lawyers and Law Students
ByThe Federalist Society is a great resource for anyone interested in learning more about conservative and libertarian legal scholarship and helping to reform the judiciary. They provide assistance, speakers, and credibility to young students and lawyers who are eager to hear from the more conservative side of the bar.
If you are a law student or considering becoming one, we recommend you check out their prelaw recommended reading list and their bibliography of conservative and libertarian legal scholarship. If you think this is your cup of tea, check into joining your law school chapter and seeing if you can work with the team in Washington D.C. to book a speaker or a debate for your school. Once you graduate, you might want join your local lawyers chapter… or start one.
If you’re not a lawyer, you might still want to check out the multimedia section of the Federalist Society web page. This section includes speeches by law professors and judges on timely and interesting topics. The discussion can be a little arcane at times, but a large part of the charm of these audio and video lectures is that the issues discussed are frequently extremely important and yet their complexity means that you’ll hear almost nothing about them in a mainstream media that continues to shy away from coverage of the courts.
Unfortunately, we’ve found that the streaming video/audio from the site is problematic and results in interruptions that are too frequent. That’s too bad given the quality of the material. Perhaps hosting on YouTube or Viddler and embedding at the Federalist Society web page might make more sense, reach a larger audience, and save hosting fees.
