GeoBytes IP Address Locator: Double-Checking the Locations of Our “Canadian” and “British” Health Care Commenters

This morning a commenter named “Anna” posted on Daily Uprising that, as a Canadian, she was offended by all of the uninformed bashing of the Canadian system coming from American opponents of ObamaCare. We calmly pointed out that most such bashing comes on the authority of disgruntled Canadians, but we also checked the location of the IP address for the machine she posted her message from. It turns out that the IP address of our outraged Canadian is located in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Strange? There are plausible explanations including the possibility that she is merely visiting the United States on a vacation or that she’s using an advanced proxy that isn’t registered as a proxy.

It’s more likely, however, that she is part of any number of American liberals who are posting as Canadian and British citizens in order to give testimony about the effectiveness of these “competing systems” or to remind opponents of socialized medicine how rude and ethnocentric they are being.

Note: You could go through much more elaborate steps in order to locate with greater certainty the physical location of the machine being posted from with a greater degree of certainty, but it’s unlikely that you’ll ever reach complete certainty about the nationality of the “foreign” ObamaCare supporter. We note this here just because the number of foreign backers of ObamaCare we’ve encountered are connected with U.S. IP addresses a suprising amount of the time. Our experience may not be representative.
