Handsoff.org: Online Coalition to Stop “Net Neutrality” and Keep the Internet Free
ByThe conservative and libertarian movements are mobilized right now against further government interference in health insurance and energy markets. Those are important concerns, but we’d like to add a third key concern for those who still believe in liberty: Protecting the Internet from Regulators and Politicians.
During the last decade, well-intentioned politicians and policy-makers have begun to try to civilize cyberspace. We object to such efforts because we not only appreciate how well the largely unregulated or unenforced world of the internet functions, but also because we see it as an important model for a people who increasingly believe that complex systems might just fall apart without top-down control from Uncle Sam. The internet makes a pretty good case for liberty classically understood.
We’ve commented on the cyber-security threat to internet freedom on several different occasions before, but we’d like to emphasize that the net-neutrality threat may very well be more immediate and can come not only from Congress, but from an increasingly ambitious FCC.
Information and argumentation supporting net-neutrality regulation is available all over the internet. If you are P.R.-minded law professor or a CopyLeft cultist, you’ve probably swallowed more pro-regulation, pro-centralized control propaganda than you need in a lifetime. The problem is that there aren’t a lot of people actively writing and arguing the contra in this debate.
One group that has stepped forward to oppose net-neutrality is “Hands Off the Internet.” They have some decent links and content on their website, but one of the worst style sheets around. If you can’t read the content, you’ll need to highlight the text by clicking with your left mouse button, holding the button, and highlighting the text that is difficult to read. We recommend this site because — even though we are from California — we still believe content outweighs style. Click on the thumbnail link below to visit handsoff.org:
