International Religious Freedom News: Resource for Documenting Governmental Intolerance and Persecution Around the Globe

By Brandon Martin

We’ve been fond of studying the persecution of Christians in communist countries like North Korea because it provides a very real illustration of the continuing horrors of communism.

However, the phenomenon of Christian persecution and systematic discrimination against Christians is not limited to communist countries and third world theocracies.  Increasingly, western socialist governments are showing that government without sufficient restriction can be reluctant and possibly incapable of keeping its paternalistic nature away from the sphere of private belief.

It’s a trend that both Christians and non-Christians who believe that individuals should be afforded the dignity of determining their own beliefs should be concerned about.  Those who want to illustrate the potential for government to trample on liberty need look no farther than the plight of many Christians under governments that seek to improve men rather than respect them.

Enter the Becket Fund’s International Religious Freedom News Blog and Email Newsletter.  The compendium of news stories about laws around the globe that suppress religious liberty began as an email newsletter and is now available via both blog and email.

The Becket Fund is a great pro-bono firm that protects religious liberty in general in a broad range of areas from land use to education policy.  They are pro-religious freedom, but don’t advocate on behalf of any particular religion, so their work in the courtroom as well as on the International Religious Freedom News blog appeals to a larger audience of those interested in freedom of belief.
