The Tax Foundation: Online Cap and Trade Tax Calculator

The Tax Foundation has created a Cap and Trade Tax Calculator for those interested in either (1) an estimation of how much the Waxman-Markey might cost their household or (2) an online advocacy tool useful for audiences who have had enough of political buzzwords and ad copy. We believe that the cost of the legislation will be significantly higher for most families, but the numbers the calculator provides should be enough to persuade environmentalists and those who doubt that Cap and Trade will have an adverse effect on working families that the burden on even lower income earners is imposing and can be calculated as a percentage of income.

The calculator is a companion piece to a technical working paper by Andrew Chamberlain entitled, “Who Pays for Climate Policy? New Estimates of the Household Burden and Economic Impact of a U.S. Cap-and-Trade System.” We haven’t read Andrew’s paper, yet, but if you are an academic or are into economics and social science or tax policy, you may want to check out the source material.
