Facebook Wonder Girl Drafts a Candidate: Melissa Ward of “Save Mr. Latham” Fame is Drafting Her Local Radio Talk Show Host to Run for the House of Representatives

By Brandon Martin

Earlier this year, Melissa Ward founded a facebook group to rally the nation in support of a first year history teacher at her high school after the school administration and local school board attempted to fire him because of his conservative politics. Melissa WardWard’s knack for new media saved “Mr. Latham” his teaching job and completely embarrased the adminstrators and school board at a national level after major news outlets including Fox News Channel picked up the story.

According to Melissa, however, the first journalist to pick up the story of Mr. Latham’s unfair firing was a local radio talk show host named Darla Jaye. Now, Melisa is launching a campaign on Facebook to support Darla’s potential run for the House of Representatives. Here’s a snippit of Melissa’s recent message announcing the drive to support Darla Jaye:

“Most of you don’t live in Kansas, but we have Congressman Dennis Moore as our represenative, for the 3rd District.

There is a group started to encourage a local radio host, Darla Jaye, to run against him. Draft Darla is created to show her that people do want her to run for US House of Represenatives. A lot of people are supporting her in the KC area; however, she says there needs to be 2,000 members for her to seriously consider it.

Darla Jaye is a radio talk host in the Kansas City area. Darla is on facebook, you can look her up and her website is http://www.kmbz.com/pages/2589230.php?. She was the first news orgainization, either radio or local to run the Mr. Latham story.

Darla is very outspoken against President Obama’s actions: spending, not listening to the people and Health Care Forum. Dennis Moore is a democract who votes along party ideology. This summer, he never once, had a Health Care Forum when he was repeatedly asked for one. We need to get him out of office.

Please help Kansas and when you need help getting a true conservative elected, I will help you. Fight this fight with me!

If you could please join the group, Draft Darla, to show her that there are people who want normal, everyday citizens to run for office. Moreover, that normal person can run for office and do make a difference. Not all politicans have to millionaires. This is still a goverment that is “for the people, by the people and for the people.”

Thank you,

Sincerly,
Melissa Ward”

The cynic in me says that this is a talk radio personality using a young girl for promotion, but there’s also an optimist in me that can’t help but point out how so many of the successful grassroots conservative efforts of the last year have started with a similarly innocent, almost naive tone. Melissa writes in a straightforward and sincere fashion and it is very difficult to resist. We don’t know anything about Darla and we don’t know whether another more promising Republican is considering a run for the seat or whether the seat is even winnable, at all… but we joined the Draft Darla Facebook group, anyway!

Great work, Melissa. Online activists who think they need to get fancier and slicker, might just want to check out your sincerity and your success first.

Hi Brandon! Don't be a cynic! I would NEVER use Melissa to help me advance anything! She is a wonderful young woman, who offered to intern for me and my show free several months ago. I absolutely adore her, and think she has a very bright future!

As for the DRAFT DARLA facebook page, and Melissa's appeal, I had nothing to do with either one of them. I am honored and have put some thought into whether I could even win. I have a career I love and a radio job that is actually kind of stable(very unusual), and the question is, do I want to give that up? The other question is this: Can I do more for my community as a Talk Host or a Congressional candidate? I don't know the answer to that, yet.

No matter what happens, I thank you for joining the facebook page, and for writing about a young woman who will be a bright light in politics in the future!
    Sincerely,
    Darla Jaye

Thanks for commenting Greg. We hope you'll feel free to keep us up to date on Melissa and all that she accomplishes. I don't know anything about Darla's district, but I hope she runs and brings Melissa with her as a legislative aide. I thoroughly enjoyed working in D.C. and I did learn a little something in between kickball games on the mall, too. It might be saying too much, but all candidates should bring at least one true believer with them in a significant staff position… just so that they have to face looks of disappointment if they learn to compromise too easily.

Brandon, I live in KC, I have listened to Darla since day one of her show and I know she would never use this girl for promotion. Darla is the one local host with the guts to take on anyone, she even took on Jesse Jackson, and he couldnt handle it! Dennis Moore is the worst kind of Democrat ( like there is a good kind )he is the snake in the grass Dem, The man stood in front of me, shook my hand and pledged his support for the 2nd Amendment, look at his voting record on anything firearms related..LIAR.

The glass is half full my friend. I put a link to Draft Darla on my blog…I believe she can win and she is in it to help Kansas and America!
